“Alma” translates to “soul” and this park has historically functioned as the heart and soul of the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood. The Vision Plan represents future improvements for the beloved park that celebrates and honors the Chicano culture and provides new spaces for play and relaxation.
Livable Cities Studio led the planning process with Denver Parks and Recreation. Over the course of 10 months, our team had a total of 2,539 engagement touch points and facilitated a robust engagement process including three public meetings, three community surveys, and 12 community events and focus groups. For this project, Livable Cities piloted the Community Connectors initiative with Denver Parks and Recreation. This program hires people already embedded within the community to provide bridges of connection to reach populations who may be skeptical about traditional engagement methods.
Through these extensive engagement efforts, our team developed a concept that weaves together places to celebrate the park’s unique history with active recreation opportunities. The Vision Plan received an Advancing Diversity and Social Change award from the American Planning Association Colorado Chapter in 2023.
