The Sun Valley Neighborhood in West Denver, the lowest income community in the state, received a $30 million Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) Implementation Grant from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2016. They are currently undergoing a massive redevelopment into a next-generation community – one that is a mixed-income, mixed-use place with new parks, streetscapes, international food market, micro-restaurant cluster, a youth hub, and other community services. The vision for the site builds off the Federal-Decatur Station Area Plan, led by Meredith Wenskoski while at her previous firm, and capitalizes on the connections to the South Platte River and the light rail station. The urban design framework created a new street grid that provides direct connections to the site as well as to the river and neighborhood school.
Meredith Wenskoski has been working closely with the Denver Housing Authority on Sun Valley since 2011. Her work began on the Decatur-Federal Station Area Plan and future phases of work continued from that plan.
