In cities across the country, streets often prioritize cars over people, limiting opportunities for connection, culture, and vibrant public life. The Washington Street Corridor project flips that narrative, transforming a heavily trafficked roadway into a thriving, mixed-use “main street” that celebrates the history and spirit of Globeville while creating a safer, more sustainable, and people-centered corridor.

Identified as a priority in the Globeville Neighborhood Plan, this $23 million investment reimagines Washington Street as a multi-modal connector and community destination. The design expands the right-of-way to introduce generous pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, creating safe, intuitive connections across the corridor. A wide shared-use path anchors the streetscape, encouraging walking, biking, and rolling, while new intersections and traffic-calming elements improve safety for all modes of travel.

This transformation is about more than mobility—it’s about identity. The corridor integrates stormwater planters, interpretive elements, and public art to reflect the area’s rich cultural fabric and industrial history, making Washington Street a place that feels authentically Globeville. With just 2.5% of trips currently by bike and 10% by foot, this bold re-envisioning creates a framework for healthier, more active living while inviting private reinvestment and community pride.

Livable Cities Studio is leading the urban and streetscape design as part of a visionary, multidisciplinary team shaping a dynamic future for this corridor. Working hand-in-hand with the City and County of Denver and the residents of Globeville, the team’s design brings together engineering innovation, green infrastructure, and placemaking to create a corridor that is as functional as it is inspiring—a true front porch for the neighborhood.

Project collaborators include the City and County of Denver, RS&H, OV Consulting, Inherent Character, Clanton, Hydrosystems, and, most importantly, the Globeville community.
