The Joseph P. Martinez Park Vision Plan serves as a model for integrating environmentally sensitive and culturally responsive design, guided by a community-driven vision that honors the legacy of Joseph P. Martinez and the vibrant history of Villa Park.
Nestled in West Denver, this 12-acre park is at the heart of a diverse yet historically underserved community. The reimagined park embraces the rich cultural fabric of the surrounding neighborhoods, pays tribute to its namesake, and enhances the natural ecology of Lakewood Gulch—offering new opportunities for health and wellness. Over the years leading to this planning effort, the park had fallen into disrepair, with the memorial to Joseph P. Martinez suffering vandalism, defacement, and eventual removal.
Livable Cities Studio led the Joseph P. Martinez Park Vision Plan for the City and County of Denver, which was completed in 2021. Our studio also spearheaded the park redesign and associated community engagement for the first phase of implementation, set for completion in late 2025. Throughout the process, our team worked closely with local residents, schools, and neighborhood organizations—fostering a deep sense of ownership and connection to the park’s future.
The park’s design is a celebration of culture, community, and nature. Inspired by Joseph P. Martinez’s story, local aspirations for events, recreation, and healthy living, as well as the tranquil presence of Lakewood Gulch, the design weaves these elements into a cohesive and meaningful space. The park will stand as a testament to the community’s cultural heritage, honor Private Martinez and Latino Medal of Honor recipients through interpretive features, and create a dynamic, active environment that Villa Park residents can take pride in for generations to come.
